As soon as you get that coveted GPS system, then your mind will naturally start thinking about all the cool accessories. Seriously, though, most of the time the extras are actually desirable and needed. For example, you’ll need to mount it in your vehicle. Do you want to use a case to carry it in? (Recommended, by the way.) Your unit will need periodic charging if you want to use it. It’s always a good idea to have additional map cards. It’s easy to initially think you can do without; but then when you look at the possible situations, then it starts to change on you. So we’re going to talk about some of the more widely used GPS accessories available right now.

You could possibly spend way too much time trying to look at all the carrying cases out there. They come in hard shells and soft shells. Some have multiple pockets. The case design you choose really should be based on what your personal needs are. If you travel a lot you should spring for the larger and more extensive case. Something like that will be a good idea because you won’t have GPS gear tucked away here and there. For the less frequent traveller, then one of the simpler designs with less features will be more appropriate.

Adaptors are absolutely necessary if you are going to own a GPS system. And this is one of those “areas” of extras where you will come across everyone and their brother selling them. We’ll bet someone else’s farm that you received an adaptor (for vehicle use) when you purchased your unit. But one other kind we suggest is the home adaptor, to be used indoors, just because they are very convenient and you may not want to always charge in your car/truck. Also, it’s highly suggested to pick-up an international adaptor if you plan to travel out of country, and you want to take your GPS.

All GPS systems and units require a mounting assembly. Just to be fair, you normally receive a “free” mounting assembly (thing) that is basically bare-bones; it has suction cups and flimsy metal/wires. This is certainly possible to use, but as far as GPS accessories go, there are better choices out there. There are some dash mounts that fix to your dashboard (or are weighty enough that you don’t have to worry about them sliding around). These are more geared for the portable which is a trend so many people are moving toward.

If you’ve done any looking around, then you know there is quite a selection of accessories for GPS units. The accessories that you need or want to purchase will depend on your lifestyle, the reason you bought your system and how much money you have to spend. You will be in a better position when you’re knowledgeable and have done your homework (research). Our intent was to help clear the air a little bit, and to that end we hope we were successful.
